Charade

While on tour with the Grateful Dead in 1991 I started a new appreciation for reggae music and the Rastafarian ideals. This brought about many very cool interactions with reggae musicians and inspired a good many songs, this being the first. I was busking on the streets of Vancouver, BC for the previous couple months and spent a good amount of time just noodling around working on material. I was preparing to head into the backwoods of Vancouver Island and was so tired of the judgmental, arrogant people, it shows up in this song. This began as three songs and combined into the final. The parts are called Charade, Screaming and Crying, and Hypocrisy Ends All Good Intentions.

It’s all but a charade, a pastime for the enslaved
The shackles put on our feet and told that we are free
If we stand up and question them, they will shoot us down
Lock us in institutions or six feet beneath the ground

We've got to act together, we better run to the hills
For when the beast gets hungry all within it’s reach it kills
Don’t look back, don’t look behind
Or it’s eyes will make you blind
Don’t take of the greed or the comforts
Forsake Babylon’s thrills

Let not the pleasures of Babylon
Cloud your vision or your dream
Let not your soul be burdened by their
Mechanized corporate scheme
When conflicts rise between sister and brother like angry fire
Give it not the breath of air to burn
Quench it with the living water, so hot

The great play director high up on his throne holds the strings
To those souls who, like puppets will follow him home.

You screaming and you crying
You screaming in the streets
Saying freedom of our souls and freedom of speech
Shelter from the anger and the acid rain
A little food for our bellies, food for the brain
Radiation suits to ease the pain
Mental institutes to keep us sane
What sense does it make be it give or take
What sense does it make be it real or fake

Whatever happened to the peace and good fortune
They prophesy in that book
They say that heaven is a place high in the sky well
Open up your little eyes and take a look

We still have fresh drinking water
Unpolluted air to breathe
Fertile earth, the healing herbs
A little food to share for you and me

The time has come my brothers and sisters join in hand
The time has come, we must act now for us to heal the land

The sun he burning down in our eyes and on our skin
They saying melanoma from all the radiation
There’s a toxic cloud growing in the sky above our heads
Well we had better get together or we’re better off dead
You see the simple man on the side of the road
He don’t give in he don’t sell his soul
No prejudice in the life he’s living
In the race, the face or the color of the skin

Men try to break you down, they feed you lies
You can see deceit behind their eyes
Corporation scum pollutes our blood
Leaves us to swim in their toxic mud

You running you hiding you crying in pain
Don’t you be a pawn in their fascist game
Never give in, let the spirit remain
Announce their fear and announce their shame

You running and you hiding and you crying for aid
Don’t you play a part in the false charade
Never give in to the power and fame
Though temptation will call again and again

Know what you believe in and let your eye grin
Fight their philosophy of pain and sin
Never give up, don’t ever give in
Hypocrisy ends all good intentions
